MTSA Quick Facts
What’s new?
In January 2025, the US Coast Guard updated the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA) to include 33 CFR 101 and 160: Cybersecurity in the Marine Transportation System.
Who’s obligated?
US-flagged vessels, Outer Continental Shelf facilities, and facilities subject to the MTSA fall under the new rule.
Why the new rule?
The updated regulation responds to the escalating cyberthreat from malicious actors targeting US marine vessels and facilities. New requirements for cybersecurity support the US Coast Guard in controlling, securing, and defending the nation’s ports, waterways, and shipping interests.
